StaLok Product Guide

STALOK PAVER SAND is the only porous polymeric joint sand available. Polymeric sand is a category of joint sand that after swept into the joints is activated by water. It sets-up firmly, inhibits weed growth, insect penetration, and erosion. Stalok Paver Sand is unigue as it captures vital rainfall and recharges the ground water supply. The sand also manages run-off and performs under constant vehicular, pedestrian, and maintenance traffic.

COMPOSITION: Stalok Paver Sand is comprised of dry, washed, quartz sand with a variety of particle sizes, combined with a non-toxic binder. The binder is a proprietary blend of two individual binders. The first is a natural binder derived from a crushed seed hull. The second is a polymeric binder derived from a mineral oil that coast the crushed seed hull. This combination is blended thoroughly into the sand, so the appearance of Stalok Paver Sand is like that of normal sand prior to installation. The combination of binders gives the Stalok Paver Sand both the flexibility of naturally stabilized joint sand and the strength of polymeric joint sand.

HOW IT WORKS: The binder works its way tino the pore spaces between the different sizes of sand particles. Once activated by water the binder swells up and binds the sand particles together, hardening after it dries. Since Stalok Paver Sand works from the pore spaces within the sand; it is easier to deal with when a little is left on the surface of the paver. Other polymeric binders essentially glue the sand in place, so they are difficult to remove when mistakes are made.

WHAT TO EXPECT: if installed properly the Stalok Paver Sand will remain consistently strong like concrete, yet still flexible. When dry, Stalok Paver Sand can be power washed and still remain in place. When wet, the Stalok Paver Sand acts like a sponge; it soaks up water until it is fully saturated, after saturation it allows the water to drain. During this process the Stalok Paver Sand will soften slightly, but will not move from between the pavers. After drying, the Stalok Paver Sand will return to its firm state without cracking. If any imperfections arise, simply sweep more Stalok Paver Sand into the joint on top of the existing Stalok Paver Sand and wet. It works with all climatic conditions and freeze/thaw cycles. Stalok Paver Sand can be used with any paver or edging materials.

DRAINAGE: Results may vary. Usually 5 inches of water will percolate through 1 square foot of Stalok Paver Sand every hour. The total drainage of the paved area depends on the percentage of the area that is comprised of joint space. For instance if a patio is 10 square feet and is comprised of 10% joint space, then the entire patio will drain 5 inches of water per hour. Remember the Stalok Paver Sand will shed water until it becomes saturated.

COVERAGE:
1-50lb bag covers approximately 50-70-sqft. for 1/8-inch joints.
1-50lb bag covers approximately 15-25-sqft. for 3/8-inch joints.
For use on maximum width 1/2" joints.

Installation Precautions:

  • When power washing, use a fan spray and avoid direct spray on the Stalok Paver Sand for long periods of time.
  • Never power wash Stalok Paver Sand when wet.
  • Avoid leaving Stalok Paver Sand on the surface of paver when adding moisture.
  • Do not use Stalok Paver Sand over regular joint sand. Mixing with regular sand will compromise the binding ability.
  • Remove debris and avoid organic matter buid up such as leaves or grass clippings.
  • Use Stalok Paver Sand only when dry weather is certain for 24 hours.
  • Do not use Stalok Paver Sand over concrete. use only over a properly drained base.

Installation Instructions:

  1. Prepare base and install pavers to recommended specifications of paver manufacturer.
  2. The pavers should be completely dry prior to installation.
  3. Sweep the Stalok Paver Sand into the joints between the pavers.
  4. Compact the Stalok Paver Sand with a vibratory plate compactor to vibrate the sand deeper into the joint.
  5. Repeat steps3 and 4 until the Stalok Paver Sand fills the entire joint.
  6. Clean the excess Stalok Paver Sand off of the surface of the pavers.
  7. Moisten only the top layer of the Stalok Paver Sand with a fine mist of water. (Make sure the water pressure is low, so the Stalok Paver Sand is not washed out of the joints.)
  8. Thoroughly soak the Stalok Paver Sand without generating any run-off of material.
  9. Check moisture penetration with a screwdriver or knife. If entire depth of joint is not moist then add more water.
  10. Allow the Stalok Paver Sand to dry for up to 24 hours or until firm.
